DIY window measuring — step by step
Our complete guide covers inside mount and outside mount techniques. Prefer a pro? We measure across Dallas–Fort Worth — often next business day.
Measure like a pro
Record width and height in multiple spots — we use the right dimension for your mount type.
Measure width
Measure the width in three places — top, middle, and bottom. For inside mount, use the narrowest width.
Measure height
Measure height on the left, center, and right. For inside mount, use the longest height.
Choose mount type
Inside mount sits within the frame; outside mount attaches to the wall or trim around the opening.
Inside or outside mount?
The right mount depends on your frame depth, trim, and the look you want. Not sure? Our team can confirm on a scheduled measure.
Inside mount
Blinds fit inside the window frame. Requires enough depth for the product. We apply standard deductions so your order fits cleanly.
Outside mount
Blinds mount to the wall or molding around the window. Often used when depth is limited or you want maximum light blocking.
What you’ll need
- Steel measuring tape (not cloth)
- Pencil and paper for each window
- Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch — do not round up
- Label each opening (e.g. Living Room, BR2)

Common measuring questions
Inside mount vs. outside mount?
Inside mount installations sit within the window frame, while outside mount installations attach to the wall or molding surrounding the window.
How do I measure for blinds?
For width, measure in three places: top, middle, and bottom. For height, measure left, center, and right. Use the narrowest width and longest height for inside mounts.
What tools do I need?
All you need is a steel measuring tape, pencil, and paper to record your measurements.
Should I round my measurements?
Never round up. Always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch and use the exact measurement. We will make deductions as needed for the perfect fit.
